Stopping Smoking - Getting Help
This is extremely difficult too due to the addictive nature of some of the chemicals in cigarettes. Some people simply stop smoking by going ‘cold turkey.’ This is stopping smoking suddenly and with no help. Whilst for some this may work, for many it will not. This is because the body is addicted to some of the chemicals in cigarettes and will crave these if they are suddenly removed.
Generally speaking, stopping smoking is more successful if Nicotine Replacement Therapy is used. These are products such as patches, chewing gums, lozenges and inhalators that contain small amounts of the addictive chemical (nicotine) which will help to reduce the cravings. This means that you are less likely to give into cravings and thus will be more likely to succeed in stopping smoking.
Many of these products are available to buy over the counter. They can also be prescribed by your GP.
McKay Pharmacy also offer a completely FREE service whereby the pharmacist can prescribe these Nicotine Replacement therapies each week and can offer advice and support to help you stop initially and then to ensure that you quit for good!
